Another busy week in 11R. With this week being friendship week, we started off with odd sock day on Monday. The students have spent time this week thinking about this year's friendship week theme "one kind word." We spent time discussing the difference between bullying and banter with staff and students role playing scenarios and thinking about how it would feel to be on the receiving end. Later in the week, the students reflected on what makes a good friend and what kind words we can use to support positive relationships - especially as kindness is one of our important school values.

In maths, we have continued to look at time with some of us applying our learning to work out speed and time using the distance/speed=time equation. The learners were truly amazed by what they found out. Some even calculated how long it would take to get from Glasgow to  Delhi by car - 122hours and 42 minutes!!! We also thought about the environmental impact of global transport with regards to pollution and the use of fossil fuels. Finally, they came up with some amazing ideas to clean up global transport in the future. These ideas included adding solar panels to vehicles and planes as well as introducing a water turbine to boats to generate enough electricity to run themselves.

United Utilities held a virtual careers event on Tuesday morning that the class attended courtesy of Google classroom. The company showed the students lots of opportunities that they could have working for them. Interestingly they made the point that any person with the correct qualifications with a disability will automatically be interviewed for a job. They showed us different jobs working in customer service as well as out in the field. We took part in a quiz and brainstormed ideas for how United Utilities could help their customers save water. This very nicely tied in with our ASDAN environmental awareness module.

In Science we used our own written instructions from last week to make our own melt and pour soap. This was a fantastic team activity that saw the students working together, allocating roles, accepting other people's ideas and opinions and generally having fun producing their own soap product. On Friday, once the soap had set, we cut and packaged the product ready to take home.  Great work 11R!!

Finally we have to say a very "Happy 16th Birthday" to our very own Kieran. Kieran has been excited all week about turning 16.
