This term we have been looking at Hairspray the musical. We have learnt about ‘Black’ and ‘White’ segregation in USA in the 1960s.

Today we have proudly danced to ‘You can’t Stop the Beat’ a song from the musical - no matter who you are, if you want to get up and dance, don’t let anyone stop you!

Earlier this week we watched the film and learned what the term ‘Negro’ meant. We discussed our feelings and compared what we know about racism today with what the film portrayed. Pupils were shocked to find out that segregation was the norm in our History.

We liked the work of Tracy Turnblad (the main character in the show) and decided to follow her lead by making a placard to ‘Show the Red Card to Racism’ and went on a march around the field chanting our protest.

A big thank you to school governor Mr Maher for joining us!
