Picture News this week asked the question, 'Can sport bring people closer together?'. We talked about the different types of sports we can take part in, discussing whether they were individual sports or team sports. We then thought about the other people involved in sporting events, such as the supporters and the crowds. The PPT then introduced 'junior parkrun' and how primary schools are being encouraged to take part in weekly parkrun events, which led us onto thinking about community events that happen in the area. Our hope, following on from this lesson, is to arrange more whole school events, so watch this space! In maths, we continued working on number and place value, using number lines to support us with finding patterns and rounding numbers. In the afternoon, we started work on our new enterprise topic, researching and designing Christmas baubles that we will hopefully be able to sell in the lead up to Christmas.
On Tuesday morning, we watched a short film called 'La Luna', about a little boy who climbed a ladder up to the stars. We then used this to write a film review, thinking about the things that we liked, we didn't like and if we would recommend it. It was quite split with the likes and dislikes from the class. In maths, we continued number and place value. In the afternoon, we went swimming at All Seasons. We continued to work on our back stroke, using a float to support us and allowing us to work on one arm stroke at a time.
Wednesday morning maths is problem solving and this week we worked on a problem called 'Heads and Feet'. We were given a number of heads and feet that were found on a farm and had to work out how many of each type of animal we could find. Some learners used multilink, others used whiteboards to draw their ideas. It was a great session of collaborative working and problem solving. Then in English, we worked on sentence structure. Some of us were building sentences using set words and some of us continued writing a story called 'Tentacles'. There were some great ideas put into the story! In the afternoon we had the first week of our options carousel. This week we had forest schools, where we went into the wooded area, taking pictures of the different types of trees, plants and insects we could find. Then we came back up to class to identify what we had found.
On Thursday morning, we used book creator to create fliers to advertise our upcoming Halloween disco. Everyone created bright and vibrant posters, with a few scary pictures thrown into the mix! Again, we visited Chorley in Bloom. This week we picked tomatoes, cleared the hedges and stripped leaves off branches to add to the hedgehog garden. In the afternoon a group did our weekly shop, whilst the others continued our Community Action ASDAN work.
Friday morning saw a change in our timetable, with a visit from Julie from Keepmoat construction. She spoke with us about what a career in construction could involve and a few of our learners took a real interest in the options! In the afternoon we had golden time.
**Star of the Week** this week is Aaron, for showing great progress and courage in his swimming lessons, jumping in without hesitation. Well done Aaron!
