This week in Maple class, we have been exploring all things Easter! We have enjoyed an Easter sensory story which was an adaptation of the popular story ‘We’re Going On A Bear Hunt’ but instead we went on an egg hunt! We also enjoyed an Easter themed sensology- exploring our 5 senses with Easter items and foods.
We all sat and engaged in an Easter themed attention autism stages 1-4. For stage 1 we watched the Easter themed cause and effect toys as Mrs Summerfield modelled how to use them appropriately. We watched the bunny race around in the carrot, the bunny hop high from the floor and also listened to the jingling bunny. For stage 2, Mrs Summerfield did an Easter egg print using just paint and black paper. Mrs Summerfield used the blue paint to create half an Easter egg on one sheet of paper and used the yellow paint to create the patterns. She then printed the other piece of paper on top to create one big Easter egg. During stage 3 we all got to take turns finding an egg in the dry rice. We sang a ‘where is the egg?’ song as we each used the scoop to retrieve an egg. Each egg had one of our friend’s faces inside, so we each opened the egg and named which friend we found. Some of us even gave the picture to the friend we found! For stage 4 we each made an Easter card to take home to our loved ones. We spread yellow paint onto our pink card using a fork to create a chick. We then stuck on two googly eyes and a beak. We were all supported with the activity using a core board and a within task schedule which guided us through each step of the task.
Some of our learners worked on using gestalt language such as “spread the paint” and “it’s a chick!” Other’s worked on using their within task schedule to be able to complete the activity with greater independence. We exercised our fine motor skills, holding the fork to spread the paint and used our creative skills- experimenting different ways we could move the paint with the fork.
We are so proud of all the progress our learners have made this term and we hope everyone has a wonderful Easter break!
