This week it’s been World Religion Week.

9G looked at 10 flags and they had to name the countries. The staff were amazed on their answers… We had the UK, USA, Brazil, China, Kenya, Israel, Australia, India, Russia and Japan.

This lead onto different religions, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam. The class looked at symbols and they had to name the religion matching the symbol. Again 9G had a good go at naming the different religions.

9G took a closer look at Islam. The class learnt that Mecca is the holy city of Islam and Muslims go there to pray. We also spoke about the prayer mats, which are handwoven and are used 5 times a day by Muslims. We had a discussion about the Qur’an which is their holy book. The pupils also looked at photos of inside a Mosque from the internet.  9G then coloured in their own mosque. They looked very colourful.

We looked at the Five Daily Prayers. We looked at Faja , Dhuhr , Asr , Maghrib and Asha. First one is before sun rise, second is midday, next is late afternoon, then after sun set and the last one is night time and these are the time the Muslims pray.

The class watched a video of a little girl who showed us around inside a Mosque . In the video little girl asked why they prayer. Her dad said it is to be nearer to god, which in the Muslims faith is Allah. She showed us how her family pray, on their own pray mats and the head of the head lead the pray.

We also looked at, Wudu. Wudu is a special kind of washing. This is done just before their prayers. We watched a little boy showing us that he had to wash his hands 3 times, his mouths 3 times, his nose 3 times, face 3 times and then wash his hands, arms, put water on his head and wash his feet.

We looked at another mosque and looked at lots of praying inside on their mats. They kneels down and bowed their heads. The person at the front leading the pray are called the Imam and they read out the Qur’an.

The staff have been amazed with how well 9G have participated in this weeks World Religion. You have shown good understanding of other peoples beliefs by the way you have asked questions and shown excellent enthusiasm and engagement  in group activities.

Also this, the class celebrated Jacobs birthday. Jacob will be 14 on Saturday.

Jacob, very kindly brought in some party bags for the class.
