For our theme of transport, we have been exploring modes of transport through sensory stories. Our current story is ‘Up, up, across the sky’ which tells a story about a journey on a hot air balloon.
We have practiced our attention and engagement skill through use of motivating props to look at, feel and hear. Some of our favourite props include squeezing a squeaky clown nose while flying past a circus, pulling back the cars to whiz fast on the race track, and sitting in a basket and holding a balloon to imitate sitting in a hot air balloon.
We also practiced our communication skills through communication boards used to comment on things happening in the story and to request a turn with the props.
Makaton was also incorporated through teachers signing key vocabulary, and we have now learnt the signs for ‘balloon” and “sky”. Well done Chestnut Class!
