Astley Park School have had an extremely busy and exciting World Book Day filled with fun and engaging activities for our learners to explore based on the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
Mrs Mahood, Mrs James and Mrs Smith organised and presented a sensory story, exploring all of our senses with all the props and materials. Our pupils had lots of fun, dressing up as Granny and The Big Bad Wolf and exploring the different the different foods that Little Red Riding Hood took for Granny in her basket.
Miss Malloy planned and delivered drama sessions for our secondary classes. Some classes have enjoyed The Werewolf game, where everyone had a different character from our village, but one person was a secret Big Bad Wolf; we had to use our debate skills to sniff out the Big Bad Wolf who has been eating all of our villagers. Other secondary classes have been working on their drama skills, where we used our counting skills to play shake it off, practiced our vocal projection in 'Sound Ball' and finally used our acting and communication skills to play charades.
Miss Ruane and Miss Brown planned and organised Little Red Riding Hood Attention Autism sessions for our primary classes and 7P. For stage 1 we provided cause and effect bucket toys based around the props from Little Red Riding Hood such as: a dancing flower; a squirting flower; a howling Wolf and red ribbon. For stage 2 we had an option of two activities to cater for all our children’s needs and sensory input. Option 1 was making a wolf face using paint, paper, shaving foam, pipe cleaners and tissue paper. Option 2 was a picture reveal using white paper, white crayons and a red water spray to reveal the hidden pictures - features of The Big Bad Wolf. We also had 2 activities for stage 3. Option 1 was chopping wood made of shaving foam and brown paint using a pretend axe. Option 2 was finding the food for Little Red Riding Hood’s basket and pulling it out of the dry rice. Our stage 4 activity was a cutting and sticking activity, creating a picture of the Big Bad Wolf pretending to be Granny in Granny’s bed. Each class was provided with a wolf, blanket, pillow, sleeping cap and pink card. Each class also had a core board to support our explorers and another core board to support our adventurers/ adventurers challenge throughout the activity, communicating our wants and needs. Our learners were also supported with a within task schedule to help support them through each step and understand what we need to do next.
It was so lovely to see how much fun our learners had dressing up as their favourite book character and how excited they were throughout the day, enjoying all the activities planned for them.
